How to read a B2B data provider's accuracy claims

Every provider claims 95%+ accuracy. Here's what those numbers actually mean and the questions you should ask.

Every B2B data provider claims high accuracy. 95%. 97%. 99%. The numbers are everywhere and they all sound the same. But accuracy claims are about as standardized as 'all-natural' on a food label — technically true in some sense, but not necessarily meaningful in yours.

The first question to ask: accuracy of what? Email validity? Title accuracy? Phone connectivity? Industry code correctness? Most providers report the metric that makes them look best. Email validity is the easiest to claim — an email either pings or it doesn't. But an email can be valid without belonging to the right person, or the person in the right role.

Title accuracy is trickier. A provider might claim 95% title accuracy, but what does 'accurate' mean? Exact match? Close enough? Inflated one level? Many providers consider 'Director' close enough to 'VP' because they target the same seniority band. If you need precise titles for personalization, those numbers are misleading.

Phone accuracy is the hardest to verify and the easiest to inflate. A direct dial might be 'accurate' if it rings the right company, even if it doesn't reach the specific person. Mobile numbers are even harder — most providers count any number that doesn't bounce as accurate, whether or not it reaches a human.

The most useful question: what is your match guarantee? Providers that stand behind their data offer replacement guarantees — if a record fails verification within a certain window, they replace it. Those that don't offer guarantees are effectively saying 'trust our number' with no recourse if the data doesn't hold up.

When evaluating providers, ask for a 100-record sample of your actual target profile — not a curated demo list. Run it through your own verification. The sample will tell you more than any accuracy claim ever will.
